Post Prefixes To Promote Proficient Performance

My students need 6 map rails in order to make word walls (vocabulary words in large font visible to all students) and hang art work showing descriptions of each vocabulary word meaning.

Prepare for College: Post Prefixes to Promote Proficient Performance. I teach Human Anatomy & Physiology to 10th-12th grade students. I also teach a basic science class to 9th and 10th graders. Many of my students in the basic science class are "at risk of failure" and repeaters from the prior year's science class. I teach six classes a day with a total of approximately 130 students. HA&P students are taking the ACT. My science class students are in this class to teach and reteach basic biology fundamentals. They are preparing to take a Biology subject area test in the next school year. Our school is working together to increase our students' vernacular. This will help improve their test scoring abilities.

Students are scoring low on tests. One main reason is due to the test vernacular used compared to the teachers, parents, and classmates. If students aren't hearing, seeing and using the same vernacular as ACT, subject area tests, etc., they are at a disadvantage before ever beginning to take a test.

My plan is to enable students to use and reuse these terms on a daily basis. Posting prefixes, root words, suffixes and words used in current and previous chapters on map rails will increase student exposure and aid in retaining the definitions. Students' own artwork defining terms will also be displayed encouraging students to take pride and ownership of the word walls. As they move from chapter to chapter in their book, they are still able to look at previous terms on the map rails helping them to retain vocabulary from previous chapters.

By providing the equipment to post terms, you will be contributing to the students improved performance on school tests, ACT, and subject area tests. A higher test score can mean the difference between passing or failing a subject, if scholarships are offered, and even which college these students will be accepted into.
