Empower English language learners! Help become an advocate focusing on struggling readers that have difficulty with the nuances of the English language. Together we can try to bridge their learning gap to create successful readers.

In order to empower economically-disadvantaged students to become exceptionally fluent readers, they must be exposed to authentic literature read aloud to them. Many times these students come from households that are literature-impoverished, thus no one can read them their bedtime story. To help students overcome this obstacle, the program entitled “Leaping into Learning to Read: Leap Pad Adventures” would allow students to check out and take home a Leap Pad system and book to take home in their back pack.

The major objectives of Leaping into Learning : *Help students who need English language exposure in a “safe” setting *Incorporate technology *Encourage parental involvement *Motivate students in becoming lifelong lovers of literature *Give students authentic experiences with texts The underlying teaching methodology is using the Best Practice of encouraging Constructivism: Forming their own knowledge with the authentic experience of interacting with text. For instance, by using the Leap Pad system,the students can reread the story at their own leisure if they missed a piece of the story without feeling intimidated or embarrassed as they could feel in the classroom if they were asked for a repeat of the story. Another example of encouraging constructivism is that they can hear the text being told in a story-telling format, which brings the story to life, and allows the student to encourage visualization.

Currently the target audience is economically-disadvantaged third graders who are struggling in reading. Indirectly, when students learn to love reading, the entire class will benefit because the level of instruction will increase dramatically. With your help we can create success stories. Students who were once struggling readers that become motivated readers will inspire others to cultivate a love of learning. Together we can make this possible!
