Intensify Student Vision & Learning One Lesson at a Time!

My students need a document camera that would allow their teachers to present everything they are demonstrating in front of the class both verbally and visually.

I am a middle school, special education teacher working with children in 5th through 8th grade. My students are enrolled in the general program, receiving daily instruction from general educators who try their best to support their diverse learning needs. Many of my students have been identified as experiencing learning impacts as a result of auditory processing weaknesses. For these kids, and many others, their teachers’ choice of instructional design and delivery can and does have a significant impact on their ability to succeed in their classes. Delivery decisions put these students at a significant disadvantage, especially when required to “listen” to “learn”, which is often. In fact, perhaps 90% of their academic instruction is delivered in a manner that requires them to take in information solely auditorily when, in reality, many need instructions presented in a variety of ways. It just seems that the nature of secondary education lends itself to this type of delivery model, which is unfortunate because this design inherently causes challenges to many children whose learning styles lie in other areas than the auditory realm. In truth, visual models (in support of the verbal presented concepts) are the key to many students’ understanding of concepts. Yet, most teachers instruct verbally, predominately through lecture and discussion. In my experience, most teachers recognize that “good teaching” requires that the materials and concepts be taught within a diverse mix of structures and using many different styles, but then, in reality, they tend to slip into the simplest and most convenient means of conveying information, which is lecture-based. Why is this? As I see it, the lack of the use of visual models is due in part because of the upfront time investment necessary for the creation of these models, which is so intense, and in part because of the difficulties teachers have translating their materials into models large enough and with enough detail for it to be a worthwhile investment of their energies. If one or both of these obstacles could be removed, I believe that most teachers would welcome the opportunity to augment their teaching with visual models. Fortunately, a document camera would resolve both of these hurdles for teachers and then some! Document camera technology allows teachers in real-time to display any and all of the materials they are using to teach a concept without fore-planning, additional preparation, or needing to create an alternate model. The real item can be displayed, manipulated, and projected on the spot. This includes 2D and 3D materials such as papers, textbook pages, slides of microscopic items – you name it, it can be viewed through the camera lens, magnified 20x’s AND projected for everyone in a class to see clearly. With the availability of a portable document camera, our teachers will have a tool that will allow them to fully realize the potential of the technology we already possess in our classrooms. With their laptop computers, integrated projection carts AND a document camera, their overhead projectors will be a thing of the past. Not only will they be able to enlarge and display documents, workbook and textbook pages, but they will also have the ability to demonstrate lessons using manipulatives projected large enough for every child in the room to see (even those in the back of the class). Document cameras are a amazing tool that will literally change the way teachers teach in a fundamental way. Once they discover the ease of use and experience the impact that unprecedented access to visual models provides their students, they will never be without this tool again. I am so excited by the potential to bring this technology to their classrooms! With your help, we can revolutionize the art of teaching. All students, regardless of their learning style, will gain full access to instruction and learning in an unprecedented way. Through your generosity, you will be directly responsible for exposing our teachers to the power of this tool and, in turn, be responsible for widespread change in how we teach all of our children. This in turn will have life long impact on numerous students. Thank you for helping me to make this a reality!
