"Cultural Literacy for $200, Alex" is our choice for this rural school. We don't want the fact that we do not have the opportunity to experience the things that many worldly city kids do, to limit our learning experiences.

Students will use this resource, "New First Dictionary of Cultural Literacy: What Your Child Needs to Know", to learn about literary classics, the United States Regions, landforms, and landmarks, as well as Proverbs, Quotes, the world, and its evolving history. I will use this book as our 'Bible', and plan to use the Internet, drawings, sketches, etc., to bring the world to our rural door! Can you help?

I teach fifth grade Enrichment and Social Studies in a small school just 30 miles or so out of a big city. These rural 11 year-old kids are very unaware of the world around them and it puts them at a huge disadvantage. Even the state has said that lack of background knowledge and culture is a weak area, so my school created an 'Enrichment' class this year, which I get to teach.

Could you be the difference for these kids? I want them to be able to know about the world, current events, and understand what's going on out there! It is sad that many of them are of German heritage yet they can't find Berlin on the map or know what a Hessian is. This book has the basic information that these kids need to know so that they can be up on things and be competitive and ready for the world.
