Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are a community of learners. The students are hard working and motivated. We serve a lower income population, composed primarily of English Language Learners. The vast majority of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch.
I'd like to give the students an opportunity to learn something that is completely different from anything they've ever tried before. There is such little time for the arts in the classroom and this is the perfect chance to be creative.
My students need books and materials for our 4th grade knitting club. They spend so much of their day drenched in curriculum which leaves very little time for arts and crafts. Many of them have nowhere to go afterschool and they only have video games to greet them when they get home. I'd like to give them a creative outlet to occupy them and expose them to a quiet past time that promotes concentration. I know they'll love it!
The students will benefit from improved concentration and a worthwhile activity to occupy their spare time. So many of them are unsupervised afterschool, this would give them a project to work on that does not involve the television.
