This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

First grade is a magical year where students learn to read and become actual readers. They start first grade knowing just a few words and leave being able read real books. My goal is that my students don't just know how to read books, but also LOVE reading!

I have a maximum capacity class (28 students) in a very diverse ethnic area right outside the Washington DC area.

Many of my students live in homes with multiple families or family members. In addition many of them are bi-lingual and only speak English in the classroom. I have ELL and Special Education students in my classroom. All of my students are eager to learn, and love to read.

My Project

Every day, we have a two hour literacy block. During this block of time, student rotate throughout different literacy centers. I would love to create a library in my classroom where students listen to and follow along authentic literature from a selection of audio books. Hearing the books is very important to these students, being that many are English language learners. It is important for them to hear the English language in as many different forms and environments as possible. It will also benefit my students for them to hear the words being pronounced correctly. Having a listening center, with many books and accompanying CDs, in my literacy block will help my student with their reading, writing, and speaking improve.

Having quality literature library will allow my students to hear and read a variety of books which will help them improve their reading and writing skills.

It will also allow them more opportunities to hear books in English, which will help them with the proper pronunciation of words, fluency, and character voices. Many of my ELL students do not get books read to them at home on a regular basis; this is why it is so important for them to get as much exposure to literature as possible.
