Future Engineers Loving/LearningPhysics with Mousetrap Cars

My students need the Mousetrap Car Kits so they can each create their own car. We will learn about calculating speed by racing our cars.

My Students

My eighth grade students have very little experience with making anything. Many have never even set a mousetrap, much less used one as the force for a car. In order for them to be interested in physics, it has to mean something to them personally.

We are a rural community with a population of 5500.

Our main industry, Alcoa Aluminum, shut down and our town is still recovering. Our school is a title I school and over 75% of our kids are on free or reduced priced lunches. Our demographics are mostly Hispanic with whites and blacks being about even in numbers.

My Project

Each child will be given the materials to build their own car. They will decorate and name it. Then we will record data about how long it takes to travel down the track. With this information they can calculate speed of their car. Each child can then explore variables, such as larger or smaller diameter tires or mass to see how that affects their speed. They will create graphs of their results. Then we can compete against each other.

Our children need to experience success and failure.

They need the life experiences of trial and error with the encouragement to see something through to completion. They will be proud of their cars and the knowledge gained will help with them to learn about Newton's laws of motion. They will be more likely to sign up for physics in high school which can lead them to being interested in engineering in college.
