My students are diverse for a small Texas town, including Native American Indians, African Americans, Hispanics, and Caucasians. Within the different races we have an socioeconomic range from homeless and poverty to high middle class income families. We are a Title I school with approximately 75% of our students receiving free or reduced lunch. We are a community that knows we can't send home a note saying to send $10 for a mousetrap car project in science because that money needs to be spent on food. Many of my students do not bring school supplies but they show up ready to learn. They love being in school because it is a safe environment. We have many students that arrive at 6:45 am even though the doors don't open until 7:20. Those same kids usually stay until 6 pm in our iTigers after school program.
