Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is a Leader in Me school beginning this year. This includes giving students the power to take ownership. That is what I want to accomplish this year.
In fourth grade, we start standardized testing on writing.
Most of our students have no interest in writing whatsoever, and have no idea where to start. We have a lot of work ahead of us to prepare for our test in the spring!
My kiddos come from very low income families, many of which the parents are not involved. When they come to our school, they receive attention and choices that are not normally available to them.
My Project
My students work better when they are given the power to choose where and how they write. They will be able to take their carpet square to any area of the classroom or hallway that will make their writing better. A different perspective than sitting at a desk can make a big difference in their ability to create stories in their mind. They will use the clipboards as an alternative to a desk when they move to their preferred area. They will be able to sharpen their pencil when needed, instead of waiting for the teacher to have a chance to take their pencil down to the community sharpener in the the workroom for them.
They will also be able to use the carpet squares to find a different place to read instead of being stuck at a desk.
These donations can make the difference between my students passing their test or not, as well as instilling a love of writing and reading as opposed to the fear of it that many of them tend to have.
