Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach 18 of the most amazing, caring second graders! I am a second grade classroom teacher and teach all subjects. My school is Title 1 meaning that we are low income and have many needs. I teach at a very diverse school. We are made up of almost 40% English Language Learners, mostly Hispanic. My students do not have access to technology at home and I would like to provide them with the opportunity to learn about Ancient Egypt and Ancient China by using digital cameras to produce short “movies.” We completed an Ancient China project last year using digital cameras and the students LOVED it! The students took photographs of artifacts from Ancient China. I downloaded the pictures into Photo Story. The children narrated about their picture into the microphone. Then we played the "movies" for the class and administration. The children had the best time and learned so much. My administration was very impressed! However, I was not able to have a digital camera for every group of students so the task was very time consuming. In order to carry out the project this year and in order to be able to use the cameras for projects on other topics, it is really important that each pair of children is able to use a digital camera throughout the year. I would LOVE to have enough digital cameras (12) with flashes for each pair of students to use one camera for the project. I would also like to have 3 microphones and 3 headphones for the children to use at our 3 computers while narrating. This project will weave technology, social studies, oral language, and cooperative groups together. I will also be able to use the cameras in the future for all subject areas. YOU will make it possible for my students to use their new digital cameras to learn about two fascinating places, Ancient Egypt and Ancient China. I know that they will have the best time becoming newscasters when using the cameras, microphones, and headphones. Thank you in advance for your generosity!!!!!
