My students need a listening center with 6 sets of regular headphones, 3 electric pianos, and 5 pairs of studio monitor headphones.

If you can't beat them, join them! Since day one it has been a constant struggle to keep my students away from the class piano. Finally, it dawned on me...teach them to play piano! I teach in a low-income, inner-city, post-Katrina school where all the students qualify for free lunch. I am starting a music program without a budget, relying totally on donations and grants. I work with students from PreK-6th and this proposal would primarily benefit the older grades. I am fortunate to teach relatively small classes of 6th graders and have been seeking a project that will have them eager to get to music, rather than trying to sneak off to P.E.! I believe I have found the answer. With the listening center unit, headphones and keyboards I create centers for them to rotate around. They can listen to our listening selection while they fill out their music journal. The can use the other headphones on the computers where they can learn about the different instruments, read biographies and listen to sound clips of other young musicians from the PBS program From the Top and work on their music theory skills. Finally, they rotate to the keyboards where I will be teaching piano lessons! Playing piano is a skill my students will appreciate the rest of their lives. Playing piano is extremely helpful in teaching them how to read music, connecting them to familiar melodies and famous pieces of music, exercising their brains as they learn to do different things simultaneously with both hides and the excitement of learning an actual instrument! Your help will allow my current students and many generations of students to come the opportunity to learn music in a new and exciting way. Learning centers are wonderful for allowing students to move at their own pace, allow me more time interacting with students in even smaller groups, incorporating students with special needs and just plain enjoying music. I know this project would be a wonderful success for my students and I look forward to the possibility of it becoming a reality!
