I teach a kindergarten class of English-language learners in a high-needs neighborhood.

My students gather together many times a day in our meeting area, which at the moment is an old, thin, dull-gray rug that just barely fits all of them. I've marked off individual spots on the rug using masking tape, which gets pulled off periodically. The result is a sad-looking space that's also not very comfortable. At the beginning of the year, a few classes got new rugs. However, my class was not granted its request. In addition, our kindergarten classes were moved from the main school building to the trailers in the parking lot of the school this year. The classrooms at our school are large and well-equipped for early education; the trailers are not.

Despite being kept out of the main school building, my class and I have managed to create a caring and hard-working community in our trailer this year. However, the nucleus of our classroom--the rug where we meet many times a day--needs improvement. A colorful rug with pictures that will inspire discussion and discovery will help keep spirits high. (It may also help reduce the number of complaints about sore bottoms.)

Your donation will help bring smiles to my students' faces as they enter their classroom. It will make meeting times more inviting. It will also help students feel that the space where they spend the majority of their waking hours is one that is beautiful and comfortable. This, in turn, may even improve the way they feel about themselves.
