Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My students are amazing and creative with many unusual life experiences to share. They are interested in technology and our magnet school has many resources, but no low resolution digital video cameras. In many more affluent schools, elementary age students are developing their communication skills by creating videos and posting them to the web. Telling stories with digital media removes the students from the roll of passive observer, to active creator.

Mostly my students do not even have Internet access at home, creating videos is not an experience they will be having at home. That is why they need digital video cameras. When students create a story with video they can learn about story telling and about visual media. I have coached students through the use of still digital cameras and I believe this would be a wonderful addition to our program. I would like my students to be media literate as defined by the American Library Association:” Media Literacy Education affirms that people use their individual skills, beliefs and experiences to construct their own media messages”. My students have few opportunities to create their own media messages. If our school does not supply them with those opportunities they will not have them.

I think I can be a leader by assisting both my students and the other teachers down a road that will improve their ability to use and understand the potential and purposes of video storytelling. The sequencing from idea to storyboard to script of a video production allows students with different talents to excel and creates a naturally differentiated learning environment.

You can make a difference in the lives of my students by helping me help the whole school become more media literate through my students. Creating videos is a collaborative process that helps students develop many skills that are useful both in and outside of school. Their videos will teach other students what they have learned.
