Grades PreK-2

Overall most children find owls fascinating and I try to use this fascination to instill a love for reading nonfiction books and incorporating lots of science and math at the same time.

I am a first grade teacher in a school where over 70% of the students are from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. One of my passions is teaching children to read and exposing them to quality works of literature by noted authors. One of my favorite authors is Avi and a book he has written called Poppy. The main character is an owl called Mr. Ocax and he has the mouse population terrified because he has made them believe their worst enemy is the porcupine. My first graders have become so engaged with this book they want to do additional research and learn about all kinds of owls. In the book, when a mouse found an owl pellet, that generated lots of discussion and of course my students wanted to know if they could look at owl pellets too.

I want to develop an excellent collection of nonfiction owl books in my classroom so the boys and girls can browse through the books and find out additional information on owls of their own choosing. In addition, I want to order owl pellets so they can take them apart and find bones of various animals and using the charting cards, identify if they are a mouse, bird, vole or whatever.

Yes, this is a first grade classroom and it is filled with children who are bright and excited about learning. They are like sponges, soaking up everything I expose them to. Your support will allow me to develop a thematic unit around owls, incorporating reading, science and math. My students asked me to write, "Please help us buy some owl puke. We want to put the skeletons of animals back together like a puzzle." How can you resist a request like this from first graders? Please help make it possible for my students to read about owls in books they can take home in their backpacks and do hands-on-learning with owl pellets.
