Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
“A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies…the man who never reads lives only one.” George R. R. Martin
My students deserve to live more than one life, by reading and discovering how books can take them places beyond their wildest dreams and imagination.
My school is located in a town of 8,416 people, in Bastrop County Texas.
The city population is ethnically diverse with 35% of residents identified as Caucasian, 17% African-American, and 46% of Hispanic or Latino origins. The school population of 570 students reflects similar numbers in its diversity. The school is also identified as 70% economically challenged, making it a Title 1, low-income school in the state of Texas. According to state testing results, the school has met the Texas state standards for academic performance, yet we only had a 77% passing rate on the state reading assessment. Our students love to read and take advantage of their opportunity to visit the library every day.
My Project
I plan to use these books to jump start my year-long programs to promote the state reading list to all students on my campus. I will hold a “Book Tasting” event in which students will get to sample each book. Tables will be set as if the students will be eating at a café. They will each have a menu of books, in which to make notes. The students will be allowed time to review the book by studying its cover, pictures, chapter titles, etc. After the book tasting, students will be encouraged to read these books. For the younger grades, they will get to mark each book off of a bingo board as they read it. Once they get a bingo they will get a reward. A blackout will result in an end of year party invitation. For the older grades, students who read at least 5 of the books will get to participate in a Bluebonnet Breakfast with special guest speakers and unlimited donuts. Students who read 15 of the books will get to compete in a Battle of the Bluebonnet Books competition.
These books will be flying off the shelves and my students will be living life after life through the characters in each of these books.
Studies show that the more kids read, the better readers they become. Reading is the key to the world, and I want my students to unlock as many doors as they desire. They will not be able to get the "taste of a good book" out of their mouth.
