I work with exceptional students. They have great brains, kind hearts, humorous outlooks, and adventurous dispositions. I love the conversations we have, and I love the opportunity I have to work with them on a daily basis. My goal is to help them fall in love with reading.
I work in the largest middle school in my county.
We educate over 750 students on a daily basis. We are considered a Title I school, with many of our students qualifying for free or reduced lunch.
Despite the hardships many of our students endure, they come to school excited to learn. They have displayed self control, respect, enthusiasm, kindness, responsibility, and a willingness to take control of their education and future. Students at our school are truly phenomenal.
My Project
As Mark Twain put it, "a person who won't read has no advantage over one who can't read." My goal as a teacher is to help my students fall in love with reading. I plan to create a several-weeks unit on the high-interest novel "Cinder," which is a creative adaptation of the well-known fairy tale "Cinderella." During our unit, my students will learn several important aspects of literature, including character traits, plot sequence, and theme.
Additionally, they will learn to critically analyze text, connect their findings to prior knowledge, and make academically-sound predictions. Furthermore, they will learn skills such as team work and individual accountability.
Best of all? They will learn all of these things while enjoying it at the same time!
Many of my students have admitted that they think reading is boring and of no value.
I believe this unit will captivate and challenge them, changing their minds and encouraging many of them to acknowledge that reading novels can be both scholarly and entertaining.
