It's Time to Check for Understanding, Wipe, and Repeat

My students need an affordable white board and dry-erase marker to use at their desks. I am going to construct white boards using the card stock inserted into the sheet protectors.

I know that I'm teaching, but I want to make sure that students are learning. Checking for understanding is an important tool to use to guide and adjust my instruction. As a science teacher, I'm chock full of fun demonstrations and hands-on ideas, but ultimately I need to make sure that students have learned something that they will be able to apply when it comes to a formal assessment.

I teach science in a public middle school. We serve a very diverse group of students from many different cultures and countries. For example, an entire class of my students is still part of the English language learners program. Trying to guess student understanding of topics by facial expression or the number of questions asked is near impossible.

My request is for a class set of white boards made out of sheet protectors and card stock. This will allow me a flexible tool that doesn't lose its value over time. If one of the boards gets vandalized, as happens with expensive boards, I can just throw out the page protector and make a new one. I plan to keep a class set easily accessible inside a three-ring binder. Because these "white boards" are not bulky like regular white boards, I can hand them out quickly for informal quizzes and assessment games. Having a flexible tool to use will make it much more useful to me in the classroom. Students love getting to write with the dry erase markers. Their teacher loves getting to easily check how each student is doing with a particular topic.

By funding this project, you will be empowering my students to practice what they learned before test time. As students become more comfortable expressing themselves in the language of science, they are more likely to succeed on my tests and on high-stakes standardized tests.
