Marvel and More: Great Stories for Reluctant Readers

My students need 75+ paperback novels, including multiple works by Louis Sachar, Roald Dahl, Judy Blume and Mary Pope Osbourne.

The students in my language arts classes here in Hawaii have great potential—among them are dreamers, leaders, talented artists, curious minds, dedicated workers, promising writers, young scientists, independent thinkers, and kind hearts.

Yet after seven years of school, many students are reading well below grade level. As they struggle through classes in all content areas, they’ve begun to recognize the necessity of reading, but the threat of failure isn’t enough to propel them towards success in reading independence. While most can read fluently, many students struggle to make sense of complex scientific or historical texts, or recall the central storyline when they finish a book. Some simply lack the stamina to finish the long novels and chapter books that are typical grade level texts. What they need is a selection of manageable, engaging books to spark their interest, build confidence and reading skills, and help them experience success in reading. Without this support, they may learn to read proficiently, but they’ll never become avid readers.

In order to become successful readers, my students need a classroom library of short, engaging books that will sustain their interest and build confidence without exhausting their minds or boring them. They need a range of titles that won’t embarrass them, books that they wouldn’t hesitate to share with a friend or classmate. With lots of suggestions and feedback from my classes, I’ve chosen a selection of books that will appeal to a wide variety of readers—titles concerning school life, young love, action-packed adventure, and epic fantasy. Our library will include books from favorite authors like Judy Blume, Beverly Clearly, Roald Dahl, and Louis Sachar, as well as newer series such as Captain Underpants, Ricky Ricotta, Frannie K. Stein, and the Spiderwick Chronicles. Most of the books are at the third to fourth grade level, and few exceed 200 pages in length.

This project will make a real difference with my students, helping them to discover a world of books that rivals the excitement of MySpace, iPods, PSPs, and reality TV! With an excellent classroom library at their fingertips, they’ll take the first steps towards becoming independent readers who can tackle a book of any size with confidence.
