Reading into the Past -Celebrating Black History Month

My students need a class set of the novels Nightjohn and Zeely. I have also ordered copies of Double Dutch and Elijah of Buxton and others to be used as classroom read alouds.

I teach English Language Arts to 6th graders. Over 85% of our students receive free or reduced lunch.

In celebration of Black History Month, I am interested in having my students read a class novel connected to a period in African American History. The novels that I have selected center around the theme on young people dealing with the issues of either literacy and slavery. In addition, I am interested in having my students work in book clubs using the novels 47 by Walter Dean Myers and Zeely, by Virginia Hamilton. Unfortunately, my school does not have the resources to order class novels and the books that are available to students are dated and not appealing to student interest.

I would like to order twenty-five copies of the book Night John, by Gary Paulsen, to use as the classroom novel. The book deals with an older slave who teaches a younger slave how to read. In honor of Black History Month, I feel this would be an excellent text to share with my students, encouraging them to understand the importance of reading and literacy. I also ordered African fables that I can be used during our class read aloud time.

I often tend to introduce my students to books that are inspiring and uplifting, titles that are engaging to middle school students. Any donation to our classroom in celebration of Black History Month would be an excellent teaching tool and resource for my students. I thank you in advance for your time and consideration in reading this proposal. Have a blessed day!
