Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our classroom serves 7-12 grade students ages 14-22 with multiple special needs. The students are hard working and bright from a variety of ethnic, economic and family backgrounds. They are bussed from many surrounding cities and towns in two different states because local programs could not provide for their unique combinations of special needs. Most of the students are wheelchair users, many are hearing and/or visually impaired and all have some level of communication impairment.
Imagine how difficult it is to eat or feed yourself if the muscles of your hands, arms, trunk, neck, mouth and throat do not work properly. My students face this issue many times a day. Fortunately specialized eating and feeding equipment is available to help. Unfortunately this equipment is expensive.
New spoons and forks, suction and scoop bowls and plates, and specialized cups are outside of our schools budget. Some of my students have been eating off of the same discolored and scratched adapted plate for years. New equipment is what we need!
With your donation my classroom could have new and updated eating and feeding equipment. This will allow my students to learn to eat and feed themselves more easily which will improve their independence and quality of life.
