My Students

My students are full of heart and hope. I want to inspire a passion to want to learn about the world around them and build literacy skills.

Most of my students are ethnically diverse, inner-city students in Los Angeles.

70% of them are bussed to my school and travel long and far to get a quality education. I want to do the best I can and inspire them with content that makes them want to read and makes them curious about the world around them. I want them to see how what they read is connected to their lives and how learning about the world around them can be an empowering tool to build both literacy and actionable solutions.

My Project

Students will use the Upfront New York Times Magazine to build literacy and knowledge of the world around them. They will come to realize how their lives are connected to the outside world and that they can have a voice in what happens in this world. In our unit "Decision Making in Times of Hope and Fear," students will study events around the world in which leaders and other individuals made difficult decisions. Students will evaluate the effectiveness of decisions in order to then become better decision makers themselves. We will also focus on financial literacy to help students build their knowledge base of how to deepen their understanding of what it means to be financially literate. This unit will not only build their awareness of the world they live in, but also how it is connected to their lives. They will build literacy, world knowledge and decision making skills in this unit-three things that incredibly empowering!

The curriculum students have access to can make or break their experience in school.

As a teacher new to my school this year, I want to inspire students to shape their destinies and futures. I hope you will consider supporting this project and helping build literacy and a desire to learn about the world in my students. Thank you!
