My Students

Do you remember going to the bookstore as a kid and buying your very own book to take home and keep forever? I would love for my students to have that experience!

I remember going to the bookstore every weekend while growing up and I would spend hours perusing all of the shelves, trying to find the perfect book to buy with my hard-earned allowance money.

Visiting a bookstore and buying books is often an experience that we take for granted and yet, for some of my students, this is not a literacy event that occurs in their lives. I would love to provide my students with the opportunity to purchase a book of their choice during a class trip to a Barnes and Noble bookstore. I teach 25 bright and beautiful fifth grade girls in a high-need area of New York City. Most of my students receive free or reduced-price lunch and are so eager to learn every day.

My Project

My students have been working hard all year long to become readers. They love to read and get so excited when new books are introduced to our classroom library. Though we have provided our students with wonderful books and cozy reading spots in our classroom, I would like them to experience the particular joy of being in a bookstore. Such an experience not only bolsters literacy and a love of reading, it also allows the child to see how booksellers make books and reading their life's work, and connects the child to community and the value of face time in a virtual world. I am requesting gift cards for my students to use on our field trip to the book store.

Your donation will draw awareness to the pleasures of time spent in a bookstore at a young age and hopefully this unique experience will help my bookworms to value and enjoy bookstores throughout their lives.
