Out of 93 world changing 5th graders at KIPP Charlotte only 32 are girls. These aspiring college graduates come from various parts of Charlotte with 65% living in economically disadvantaged communities with 99% of the students being African American. On average students came to KIPP Charlotte at a high second grade level in reading and a low third grade level in math. In order to get caught up, the students attend school from 7:30- 5:00 pm and go to school every other Saturday.
With only 1/3 of our school being girls, the majority of teaching is focused toward the needs of our gentleman. Over the course of the school year including the time spent together during summer school I noticed many of the girls reading and thoroughly enjoying Nancy Drew books. However, being a new school we have very few of these books on hand.
As part of movement to inspire our students to read and cultivate a love of reading the students and teachers have agreed that having various book clubs would be incredibly beneficial, especially a Nancy Drew Book Club called "Women of Mystery".
As a college prep school the young ladies at KIPP Charlotte desire to be challenged and involved in their learning. At any point during the day a person can visit the school and see every student with a book in their hand. These students love to read, and become especially motivated when they see another teammate with the same book. This gives them the opportunity to socialize in a different context. The push to be academic and a love for reading is automatically there. The Nancy Drew mystery piece places an added level of thinking, which the girls hunger for. By donating these books, this hunger can be fed. The girls' desire to become better readers and smarter individuals will be enhanced because of your help.
