Seeing The World From A Tiny Island

My project needs a variety of books that expose students to places and things they've never seen.

38 fourth and fifth graders in Nanakuli, Hawaii, need your help. My students live in a beautiful valley on the western coast of Oahu. They are all part Native Hawaiian, and their community is extremely poor. Many of them live in houses with 15 or more people, as housing costs in Hawaii are astronomical. One of my students lives with his family in tents on the beach. The school itself is Title 1 and high needs. We generally are well-supplied with the things we need, but there are a couple of small gaps.

Most of my students have spent their entire lives in this small town, rarely venturing more than 10 miles down the road. They are loving and inquisitive kids with very little knowledge of the world around them.

I've taught my students that no matter where you are, you can easily travel to new places through books. We have a map on the wall with pushpins where we mark the places we've visited through our reading. The books that I'm requesting are mostly adventure books that will increase my students' schema, as well as allow them to travel to new and exciting places. These books are mostly 3rd to 4th grade level books because that's where the biggest gap is in my classroom library.

Funding this proposal will expose some amazing kids to the vast and incredible world around them.
