My students need cameras to create media that allows them to showcase their work in a modern journalism website. Students want to create a monthly journalism broadcast.
The Academy of Media, Arts and Music students at Hillcrest High School are some of the most talented leaders in NYC. Against the odds placed against them, these racially diverse students aim to create their own learning environment by creating clubs, fundraisers for worldly issues and helping others.
Hillcrest High School students are culturally diverse and are part of a Title I school with little funding to provide for its 3,000 students in need.
Despite being a large school, Hillcrest has created a strong learning environment where students are free to create their academic learning inside and outside the classroom.
Hillcrest is broken into 9 Small Learning Communities. Our SLC -- The Academy of Media, Arts and Music is home to bright, enthusiastic Honor students from our urban neighborhood. Many of these students come from broken homes and do not have what many suburban students have.
Students from my Journalism class are bright, enthusiastic future journalists who want to create a media dynamic that showcases the school's students, teachers, and story. These students are always willing to go talk to teachers, students and other staff, while also researching larger issues in our community.
My Project
Students in my Media class will be creating online video blogs while creating a state-of-the-art website that allows them to showcase broadcast journalism. The Theatre teacher in our school is creating a news set for our class so that my students can use the cameras I am asking for to create monthly broadcasts. Our school -- with its 9 SLCs and dozens of sports teams -- have a ton of material that students can showcase how this Title I school is overcoming many obstacles towards being one of the strongest large high schools in New York City.
Students will use the equipment to create video articles that will supplement our new website. Our students are energetic and wish to pursue a career in journalism, and these video articles will be a great way for them to create portfolios for college of the work they've done in the classroom.
Many of my students come from needy families in bad neighborhoods.
I have had underprivileged students from my Journalism class overcome their lives to win Journalism scholarships, major in Journalism and even work on camera for Fox News. Despite these small successes, I am severely unequipped to provide these students with the resources that they may receive in suburban settings. These students deserve a chance to take their passion for reporting and succeed in a field they love. Thank you!!
