Hillcrest High School students are culturally diverse and are part of a Title I school with little funding to provide for its 3,000 students in need. Despite being a large school, Hillcrest has created a strong learning environment where students are free to create their academic learning inside and outside the classroom. Hillcrest is broken into 9 Small Learning Communities. Our SLC -- The Academy of Media, Arts and Music is home to bright, enthusiastic Honor students from our urban neighborhood. Many of these students come from broken homes and do not have what many suburban students have. Students from my Journalism class are bright, enthusiastic future journalists who want to create a media dynamic that showcases the school's students, teachers, and story. These students are always willing to go talk to teachers, students and other staff, while also researching larger issues in our community.
