A Piece for Peace: Using Art to Build Community Cohesion

My students needs 5 paper making deckle molds, 2 sheets of Abaca pulp for the base of the paper they will create and one paper press to dry and flatten the sheets of paper they create.

Mrs. Howard Mark Twain Elementary School
Tulsa, OK Grades 3-5

I teach visual art with a community service emphasis. This project is for 4th and 5th graders, a total of 125 students. Our school is located in an urban high risk, high poverty area with over 95% of our students living in poverty.

I would like the students to study the process of peace using art as a metaphor for community cohesion. Most of our students know everyday examples of solving problems through aggression and retaliation. My students have taken an active interest in promoting a more positive image of their neighborhood. Now they need to develop the skills to become advocates of peace.

"A Piece for Peace" not only describes the metaphor of putting smaller pieces of things together to form a larger whole, but also represents how a work of art can stand for an idea. Students will study the meaning of peace, individuals known for peaceful choices and how they can promote peace as individuals. Students will work in small groups to create handmade paper. Individual student creations will incorporate a small fiber, object, etc from all students in the class. Thus serving to promote the idea that all individuals work together to strengthen the whole. After creating the paper, students will incorporate it into a mixed media piece including symbols of peace and quotes on peace. The work will be displayed at school during the day and during an evening all school event (like parent teacher conferences or holiday programs). Students will then take their artwork home and have a visual example of how to describe peace to their families and neighbors. My students needs 5 paper making deckle molds so each group of 4 students can create handmade paper. My students need 2 sheets of Abaca pulp for the base of the paper they will create. My students need one paper press to dry and flatten the sheets of paper they create.

You will make it possible for each student to understand the part they have in creating a more peaceful and cohesive community. Each student will walk away from this project with a tangible example of how working together creates harmony and promotes peace.
