My Students

They will be keeping the important concepts for class in interactive notebooks, a new plan for our team this year. The students feel this will be a great way to collaborate as small groups and to stay organized. We will also be using the dictionary/thesaurus to assist with vocabulary acquisition.

My students are enrolled in a suburban school with nearly 3200 students.

Each of them has chosen a career pathway, and are part of one academy of their choice from Health Professions, Global Leadership, Environmental and Public Service, Arts, Communication and Design and STEM. Our school is diverse, with African American and Hispanic students nearly equally represented as well as a slightly lower percentage of Caucasian individuals. Students are the integral part of determining their coursework to drive them to success in their career pathway and academic courses. Student voice, student choice. My students participate in a variety of extracurricular activities from sports to academic organizations, including TSA (Technology Student Association). Our academies help students and parents make wise education choices by preparing them for secondary and post secondary opportunities, career preparation and advancement, meaningful work, and active, positive citizenship.

My Project

The dictionaries will be used to increase student vocabulary and word choice which in turn will increase the level of writing and create effective communication. Word choice is essential to writing. Colored paper will used for interactive notebooks which will inspire my high school students. The concept of the notebook is beyond the journals they have seen in English courses in the past. The interactive notebook is a place for reflection upon the unit or lesson presented, improving writing and communication skills, and also integrates information using foldables, another method of information organization. My students will become more collaborative; sharing information on a higher level than in previous courses. The "IN" serves as as a library and a laboratory. A library of accumulated information and a laboratory posing meaningful questions seeking well thought out answers will be a guide to their success not only in English, but also will improve their study habits in other courses in high school and in post secondary education.

After discussing the idea of interactive notebooks with my students, they are excited to eliminate the drab repositories of information.

They will replace them with the exciting twist of color which will indicate new content. Students will also use colored paper as a means of expression to reveal personal style. Students will enjoy processing assignments instead of teacher directed notes. Interactive notebooks will become the organizational anchor for multiple intelligence activities.
