Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach third grade in a very low-income neighborhood. All of our students receive free lunch at school. My entire class is learning English as a second language, and few of them have books in any language at home. We have state-issued text books, but not much supply money for books for our classroom library. We have now been told not to spend any money at all. I am working on building a library of quality children's books that my students can enjoy. The books that were already in the room are tattered paperbacks that other teachers didn't want. I know my students are so inspired and excited when they get to read nice hard-back books with cool stories and fascinating illustrations. One of the required stories that we read in third grade anthology is The Garden of Abdul Gazasi, by Chris Van Allsburg. He is the master of connecting art and literature! I would love to have the students be able to read his other books, write their responses to his literature and practice writing alternate endings or sequels to the stories. They will respond to questions about the texts. They will write comparative book reports and comparative character webs. For art, we will compare his illustrations in different stories and do some black and white sketching with pencil, and pointillism with pens. With your generous donation, we can study, compare, and enjoy quality children's literature. Your gift of art and literature will inspire not only these current third graders, but third graders for years to come! Thank you so much.
