Jump Starting Reading for ESL/ELL Students

My ELL students need the Reading Rods Hands on Kit, the Reading Rod mentor, Reading Rods Word Families Student Center and Reading Rods Phonemic Awareness Student Center to build their word and reading skills.

I teach in each 3rd grade. My school serves students who have been identified as “at-risk” that come from low socio-economic communities. The school system was taken over by the State and given a new name. We are recovering. Our school lost everything and we are making do with just the basic necessities needed to teach with.

Due to the influx of Hispanic/Latino workers that are rebuilding the city, the school/ community has had an increase of Hispanic/Latino students. These students are bi-lingual and only speak their second language (English) at school or when they have to. I have no supplies to help my students build their language skills needed to do well in school. I feel that as their teacher I'm not doing enough to move them forward in their education. I also feel that when the high-stakes testing time comes around (in about one year) that my ELL students won't be ready and have to repeat the grade.

I need a manipulative hands-on reading method that promotes reading and writing practice. Reading Rods does just that. The Reading Rods kits will help reinforce phonemic awareness, sound/symbol relationships, word & sentence building, and all other fundamentals of reading that my ESL/ELL students are missing. The Reading Mentor will allow my students to hear the letters, words, or sentences they built with the Reading Rods Kits. They will also be able to practice producing the sounds, segmenting and identifying sounds.

Your help will ensure that my ESL/ELL students gain confidence in their abilities. They then will be able to catch up with my other students and not feel so isolated due to language barriers. They will be ready for their high stakes testing (LEAP) and do very well on it.
