Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My learners come come from several towns in two states. They are bussed to our program because their home school cannot meet their multiple special needs. The students are ages 16-21 and have a variety of physical, sensory (visual and hearing impairment) and cognitive disabilities, however they are hard workers who love to learn.
By high school many special needs programs give up on special needs learning how to write, however I have had great success over the years teaching learners to print by hand using a variety of instructional techniques, adaptive equipment and focusing on the student's desire to communicate in writing. At this time we do not have the supplies for me to continue with the arduous task of teaching older students how to write.
My students would greatly benefits from access to more curricular and adaptive tools to help them learn to write. We need copies of the Handwriting without Tears books and manipulatives. We need new adaptive pencils and pencil grips. We need items to adapt papers and books for students with low vision. With all of this the chance that my students learn to write greatly improves.
Your donations of materials to aid my significantly challenged special needs students to learn to communicate in print with benefit their lives for many years to come. Imagine not being able to write your name to sign documents? That is what lies ahead for students who do not learn to print. You can help make sure my students have the tools they need!
