Help Us Read, Write, and Prepare for Election 2014!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Help us connect with American culture and politics so that we can build our reading and writing skills as we become informed voters --and leaders-- in 2014! We are a class of 33 students in a very high need area of New York City. Nearly half of us are special education students, most of us qualify for free lunch, many of us are first generation Americans, and we ALL need interesting reading material and a way to get up-to-date and interesting information about American politics and culture! *Sometimes it is hard to see the importance of national news to our everyday lives... *Sometimes it is difficult to imagine how we can grow into American voters and leaders... *Sometimes it is just as hard to find something on our reading level that is fun and engaging to read... *Sometimes it is hard to understand the stories and questions we find on state and national exams because they are about lifestyles and events so different from what we have experienced... *Sometimes it is hard for our schools to pay for the things so many others take for granted... Your generous donation of weekly news and culture magazines can help us overcome all of these difficulties! With your kind donation, every week full color news magazines by Time and Weekly Reader will be delivered to our classroom so that we can read about the latest news--from the elections to the latest cultural trends--every week! The magazines are on various reading levels so that every member of the class will have their own copy of a current, captivating magazine that is just right for him or her to use to complete Social Studies, Language Arts, and math projects and to read during quiet reading time. The magazines are really interesting, so even those of us who struggle with reading are motivated to learn. Plus, they come along with materials to help build our writing skills. A kids atlas and almanac will provide a resource to which to turn when we have questions or want to explore a topic in more depth--and build our research skills! These magazines are read by kids all over the country, in private schools and exemplary public schools. YOU can let us share in the national discourse. YOU can help us improve our reading skills.
