This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Wanted: tools to inspire urban 9th graders who think that they cannot become doctors, nurses, or medical care providers because they are "bad" at science. I teach 9th grade Biology in a small urban city just north of Boston. The majority of my students are considered to be of a minority population and receive free-and-reduced lunches. Though I teach non-honors students, I truly believe that they are all "good scientists." They have a unique view of the world which helps them when solving scientific problems. Many of my students are also students with individual education plans (IEPs) who are not usually introduced to mainstream science classes.

Money is tight. There is no easy, sparkling way to say it. Because the bulk of our budget went to purchasing new text books my school has very little left over for the necessary supplies, especially dissection. My students are chomping at the bit to dissect something. They are constantly asking me when we get to the "dissection unit." The question of why I became a Biology teacher (when I could have been a doctor or nurse or worked in a lab) always arise. I tell my students very honestly that I developed a love of Biology when my teacher introduced me to dissection. Students have already paired themselves according to the squeamish and the not-squeamish. Students have also spent their own money, and pre-purchased gloves so that we will have supplies when it is dissection time! My students are really trying to make life easier for me!

In order for my students to have a meaningful dissection experience, I will need 30 scalpels and blades, 10 student dissecting kits, and one pail of 50 plain (4"-5") Bullfrogs. Dissection, in the past, has completely pulled my students back to loving science. My students take the State assessments and see themselves score below suburban schools. They think they are bad at science. In reality, these students are wonderful scientists. I am seeking an experience which will change their lives. I know that not all of my students will be inspired to become doctors, nurses, or medical care providers, but I know that they will remember the experience forever; and it may inspire them to take additional science courses or AP classes.
