Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

English has to be the common language in my classroom! I teach in a primarily immigrant community. My 21 students come from 5 different language backgrounds and only 5 of them are native English speakers. All of them come from low-income families. It is important that the children master English to communicate with each other and to learn to read, write, and do math.

My classroom lacks the play kitchen that is standard in so many other kindergartens. When we do our English language development unit on grocery shopping, food and the kitchen, they enjoy using the play food, but we have no means of "cooking" it and no utensils and dishes for serving.

Kinders love to cook and serve food, and they love to talk while they are doing it! A play kitchen with dishes and utensils could be out all year for the children to play in, bringing to life the vocabulary we teach about food, cooking, and family life.

You have the chance to make a difference in the lives of some of the sweetest children you could ever meet. They don't have the latest fad toys or the nicest clothes, but they love to play and they love to learn. With a play kitchen children of different language backgrounds could work and share and talk together as they busy themselves with grocery shopping, storing food in the refrigerator, cooking, serving and eating. We are a circle of love, but we need to be a circle of communication as well, and our common tongue will be the English we learn and need.
