Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

"So are we really going to be able to dissect cow's eyes?!" ~8th graders at Bethune The 8th grade class at Mary McLeod Bethune Academy are a curious and invested bunch. Mary McLeod Bethune Academy is a Title 1 school in North Philadelphia. We are a public school that serves in a high-need community. Most of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch. However, their dreams defy their current situation. Not only do they dream big, they also have the work ethic and persistence to make their dreams come true.

This year I was given a beautiful renovated science lab. The lab is beautiful, but is missing some of the most important items in a traditional science lab, supplies.

My students have done and enjoyed many labs that I have created from materials found at the grocery store. However, I want to give them more. They deserve to have the proper instruments to dissect their cow's eyes. They deserve to be able to see and hold different rocks and minerals instead of just seeing pictures.

Please help science come to life for my students. They want to learn and explore. Help them enhance their learning and make their dreams come true.
