Mrs. Casey Carver Elementary School
Mount Olive, NC Grades 3-5

I am a fourth grade teacher in a rural K-5 school in North Carolina. I am also a member of the Multicultural Committee at my school. The demographics of our school population are the following: Almost 80 percent of our students are on free and reduced lunch, forty-three percent of our students are African American, 30 percent Latino and the rest are Caucasian or other. My school is making great strides to reach out to our parents and community. One such venture that our school has implemented is the creation of a Multicultural committee. Last year was the first year my school had this committee. We received a lot of positive feedback from our students, staff, and parents in our attempts to recognize the accomplishments and culture of various ethic groups.

As a member of the multicultural committee, it is our goal to educate our students and parents with an "awareness" of the cultures all around us. Students have an opportunity to research the "theme" for the month, create arts and crafts, and assist in the creation of a bulletin board displayed at the entrance of the school. This gives our students ownership in the beautification of our school and a chance to "show off" what they are learned.

Each month we highlight an ethnic group, people or country, such as celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month, Native American Month, Women's History Month etc... Currently, we are limited in our resources due to lack of supplies and funds. Starting with Hispanic Heritage month on September 15-October 15, we will begin featuring arts and crafts from the Hispanic culture. Students would need materials to create pictures, flags, masks, musical instruments, and various crafts from Spanish-speaking countries. In November for Native American Month, we will display totem poles, masks, hieroglyphics, and other arts are crafts representing different Native American tribes. We will continue to feature different groups through out the year. Parents, students, and staff can see the creative displays the students have done.

We are seeking assistance in providing more materials such as bulletin board supplies, construction paper, glitter, feathers, beads and other arts and crafts supplies in order to create monthly bulletin boards displaying the art work and crafts of the students. It is our belief that it is important to respect and embrace the cultures and customs of others. Providing the students with an opportunity to learn, research and create things from different cultures as well as our own, it will empower them to become better citizens and to have a better view of the world view.
