Lady Bird "Children are likely to live up to what you believe of them." I teach 4th grade in an inclusive classroom. When my students do not understand the material, they act out and display inappropriate behaviors, changing the way teachers view them. I do not want this to hinder their education.
The students in fourth grade have disabilities ranging from autism to learning, behavioral, and attention.
They all have difficulty comprehending a verbal lesson and simply staring at a textbook. Subsequently, they are holding concentration for limited periods of time. The need for multimodal teaching is an authentic dilemma. My students need to visualize concrete written examples during instruction in the co-taught classroom. I want to ensure that they have every opportunity possible to access the lesson regardless of their disability.
My Project
The students consistently do not have paper, pencils, or supplies. Money is tight and resources are limited. After the state administered assessment in April 2013, ten children received failing scores in the area of mathematics. I have created and piloted a program where I instruct the students in small groups to promote math skills. The school media center is being utilized for this study. A Promethean Board is being used for the interactive technology-based small group study. The group of students either sits on the carpet in front of the Promethean Board for instruction or at the tables for assessments. The software offers the ability to incorporate multiple sizes, colors, and shapes to aid in comprehension of the math standards. The small groups give the students consistent opportunities to participate. I want them to have their own interactive boards as well. This will give them the chance to work on every example given, and will negate the need for paper, pencils, and supplies.
Our present day learners will succeed within interactive groups.
Students today are learning everything through technology. They spend most of their days staring at a screen and are usually quite computer literate and tech savvy. The small group setting allows children the opportunity to overcome the obstacles that are faced in the inclusive classroom. As this generation grows and new generations come to existence, technology will be at the core of education. These students are our future.
