Students in IB history do a great deal of rigorous research and analysis. In addition to being hard working, they are also creative and energetic.
Our school is a place where most students deeply value education; they tend to be thoughtful both about what they are learning and why.
They are highly academic but also artistic and motivated by interdisciplinary assignments that combine art with social studies themes.
My Project
There are times during the year when students apply key concepts from the course. They design book covers that showcase Cold War historiography; they design memorials for events they have studied, they work with word collages from WWI poems. These projects allow students to apply what they are learning creatively.
The drawing supplies and paper will finally allow my students to have artistic materials that are worthy of their ideas.
My students are currently drawing on packing paper, with a dried out incomplete mix of crayons and markers.
Having the right materials shows students that their creative work is worthwhile and valued. These kids often create amazing and graphic responses to the historical themes we study; the quality of materials should enhance not detract from the messages they want to share.
