Teaching half-day kindergarten in Utah, which has one of the lowest fundings per child in the entire United States, can be challenging. Moreover, I am at a school that just opened up last year so I am scrambling to come up with even the basic necessities to teach school. Basically, I have tables and chairs, a desk and a file cabinet. Everything else I need to acquire without spending any of the limited budget. Recently, I asked my parents to order as many books as possible from a Scholastic Book Order so I could use the bonus points I have saved up to acquire a listening center. It worked, but completely drained my point account. Now I am in need of learning devices with headphones that can help my attention-deficit students focus on their learning instead of the world around them.

Six students in each class have attention problems. The only time they can learn is when all external stimuli are blocked out. This is impossible in a Kindergarten classroom without headphones. There is just too much going on. Recently, I noticed their learning is accelerated in the computer lab with headphones on. However, I only have access to the lab for one-half hour a week. Lacking even one child computer in my classroom is frustrating, because I cannot achieve their learning environment. Each day I see these six students fall farther and farther behind, because they cannot block out the stimuli around them on their own. These students need help or they will begin a downward spiral.

If these six students were to get LeapPads, they could achieve their optimal learning environment every day in the classroom at less than half the cost of a computer. In essence, they could learn more than once a week.

Watching a child struggle rips at your heart strings everyday. Knowing what needs to be done and not having the financing is even more difficult. As a teacher I feel trapped and discouraged. However, with even the littlest additions, such as LeapPads, these students can finally start to learn. They can begin their journey on the path to achievement instead of struggling and maybe eventually failure.
