Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My fourth grade students at The Learning Community are talented, young writers who carry their writer's notebooks back and forth to school daily. They love expressing themselves in both prose and poetry. They are this writing teacher's dream!
We all feel pressure to give "the perfect gift" to a loved one on their birthday or a holiday. That pressure can be exacerbated for children, particularly children living in poverty (100% of my class qualifies for free- or reduced-price lunch.) So what's a child to do when he or she wants to give a meaningful gift?
The generous writers in my classroom need the tools to shape their beautiful words into beautiful presents. I would like to create an area in my classroom stocked with decorative paper, stickers, ribbons, and other crafty treats so my students can create handmade keepsakes that feature their creative stories and poems. Aren't those the gifts that you have saved over the years -- brittle and faded but unable to part with them?
Your donation will allow my students to transform their narratives, memoirs, and poetry into works of art. Your gift will also help my students to share their own gifts -- a chance to use their writing to touch the lives of others in ways that money cannot. We all know the best gifts are often the ones that cost the least, but reflect the time and creativity of the giver. Please help me give the simple gift of gift-giving by creating a Writing Gift Center in my fourth grade classroom. Thank you, in advance, for your generosity.
