I am a PE Teacher at the oldest continually operated elementary school in the United States. Chartered in 1795, and attended by Thomas Jefferson's grandson, New London Academy is a public PK-5 school with 350 students and is located in Bedford County, Virginia. I am extremely proud to begin my 4th year here at NLA. I have had my eye on a very important project over the past couple of years. This project requires a classroom set of pedometers so that my students may track their steps/miles across the country while in PE class and during recess. I have collaborated with our 4th and 5th grade teachers and have plans to tie in History and Geography lessons based on the cities and states that my students are able to travel. A classroom set of pedometers will allow me to move forward with this project for this year's 4th and 5th graders as well as those in the years to come. I am hoping to reiterate the importance of walking and exercise as a daily and necessary chore while allowing my students to visualize on a map how far (in miles) they can actually travel.
