I would LOVE to have a class set of quality, scientific calculators for the 7th and 8th grade students in my math class in Indiana. These students work hard and are dedicated to learning, but most come from low-income households. Because of this, students often have trouble supplying notebooks for class, let alone calculators. Although my students are making great strides this year, there are a few things holding them back. One, although they are able to think like 7th and 8th graders, they are missing many of the basic math skills (for example, simple multiplication) they need to be successful in my math class. It would help students to have calculators so that they can do more complicated problems and not be held back by the basic math skills. Seeing that 6 x 8 is 48 every time they press that into the calculator will help them to eventually know what 6 x 8 is. Also, I emphasize that we should ALWAYS check our answers, and calculators are a great resource for checking answers after students have worked out the problem and shown their work. Most importantly, knowing how to use calculators is a critical skill for the 21st century. Students can use calculators on part of the state standardized achievement exam, but this is not of much help to them as they do not have experience using calculators. I want to help my students encounter technology as much as possible, and the 4-function calculators that we now have in the classroom do not do this. The TI-30XIIs is a perfect solution for our classroom needs. Not only does it have the more advanced functions that 7th and 8th graders need to use, but it also has a two-line display so that students can check what they've entered and make sure it is correct. It will enhance the amount of work we can get done in the classroom because students will not have to waste their time calculating 2 times 10 on paper. A class set will allow me to have every student use one while in the classroom, and will allow me to give uniform instructions to every student. All of my students deserve an equal chance to succeed in this world, and your help on this project will go a long way to providing these students with the resources .
