Read into History: Immigrating to America

My students need 6 copies of four historical fiction novels to read in literature circles. This reading will help them prepare for an immigration fair that is an annual event in our school. I need two additional read aloud books to model reading and deepen understanding of immigrants coming to America.

Grades 3-5

This is a 5th grade class in a public school in South Carolina. I have 23 students that are learning to read chapter books in groups. Each group reads a different book and present it to the class when they finish reading and answering questions. Reading historical fiction books help students connect history. I have 23 students and very few books on the topic of immigration. This topic integrates language arts with Social Studies. This unit is important to my curriculum.Students make connections with history through literature circles. Reading stories about people that lived back in the time they are studying makes history real to them! It helps them add meaning to what they are studying. Your help will make it possible for my students to read, create their own plays, PowerPoint presentations, puppet shows, etc using the book that you provide. This makes history belong to them because they act out or create from the story they have read. It truly helps them connect what they are learning and understand history at their level.
