Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach an after school Guitar Club rock band that looks exactly like the movie "School of Rock." The kids absolutely love it, and have become the talk of the school. A number of my music students are special education students, who especially appreciate the chance to rock.
My students are 6-8 graders from the inner city of NYC.
Most live in the Bronx and Washington Heights, and almost all kids in my school live in poverty. Despite the challenging environment, our public school is very well run, and offers music/art programs for students as an outlet of expression.
My Project
The class I teach is a modern band, or rock band. We learn songs of all different genres and time periods, and try to write our own when possible. The most recent songs we're learning are "Twist and Shout" and "What I Like About You." We play as a full band--including electric guitars, keyboards, singers, a drummer, and usually a bass. Our bass guitar has gotten beat up from playing so much, and doesn't work properly anymore. This new bass will allow us to continue rocking as a full band unit and enjoying the backbone tone that a bass guitar brings.
My students' passion for music has increased exponentially since we started guitar club.
It always feels good during 8th period, knowing that rocking out is just around the corner after school. My students and I appreciate your thoughtfulness and care.
