I teach an elective Philosophy course to 15 juniors and seniors at a small charter high school. I am attempting to improve their critical thinking skills by introducing them to some of the greatest philosophers and their ideas. Philosophy is one of the underpinnings of a liberal (in the academic, not political sense) education and is lacking throughout secondary education. I am trying to introduce it in a small way at our school. Therefore, we need accessible survey texts for the students. The book I am requesting fits this need.
Simply put, I have no texts for the kids. We can't afford to get copies of all the texts we want to read. I can get some off the Internet, but I want students to have a summary book to read.
As I mentioned, many of the texts we want to read are available online, but this book, "Ultimate Questions: Thinking about Philosophy," will help guide the students to the larger questions of philosophy.
Teaching kids to think critically is perhaps the most important thing we can do at the secondary level. No subject in the history of the world has done better at this than philosophy. Please help me introduce the wisdom of the ages to my students in a way that they can comprehend.
