Our school serves young adults who are over-aged for traditional high schools. 80% of our students are recent immigrants to the United States. Our population represents approximately 25 different countries, mainly from Central and South American, Asia and Africa. Due to their age (18-22), they have "aged out" of the school system. Most "adult education" programs are designed for older students. The faculty and staff at our school design educational and community programs that address the needs of this particular population. Additionally, we have students from the Boston area who have never completed their schooling due to academic and behavioral issues. All of our students make a personal choice to return to school and earn their high school diploma through the Boston Public School system. Their motivation is high and the successes that they are able to achieve are inspiring to all of us. Due to the ages and socio-economic status of our students, it is often difficult for them to purchase materials. The school provides most of the materials (paper, pens, notebooks, etc.) for the students. Many of the students work, some part-time, some full-time. Several of them are parents of young children, or are responsible for the finances of their families. Calculators are needed for students to succeed -- and progress -- in the study of mathematics In the advanced math class, I create projects that challenge the students and incorporate real life examples. This year, our project will introduce newly arrived students to the Boston sports world -- specifically the Boston Red Sox (Go Team!). We will have a field trip to Fenway Park and take a tour of the first baseball park in the United States. Using calculators, the students will calculate the angles of elevation and depression to determine the angle of a home run in the smallest baseball field in the country. Using this information, they will determine the height the ball must reach in order to get a home run over the "Green Monster." This information will then be compared to data given for other ball fields (probably Yankee Stadium, to continue the rivalry between the teams!). By funding this project, you will help increase the mathematical and technical skills of our students. Also, you will help students get acclimated to this country.
