I teach math in a rural public high school. There is almost no technology available to me. I am trying to regain some of the technology that I lost to Hurricane Katrina. I am asking for a projector to connect to an ELMO. An ELMO is like an overhead projector except it shows anything that you want (not just transparencies). You can put regular paper or a calculator underneath it and it will display it in color on the screen. My need is for the projector required to make the ELMO display on the screen. I already have the ELMO, but it is useless without the projector. My projector was stolen from my old school after Hurricane Katrina. This projector/Elmo setup is fabulous! I can call students up to put their notebooks under the ELMO and the class can see how he/she worked the math problem without taking the time to re-write it on the board. I can also put a graphing calculator under it to show the graph of a line or illustrate to students the steps needed to use a graphing calculator. It is difficult to show students how to go from screen to screen without a visual for them to follow along with especially with 30+ students in a class. Another advantage is being able to put the textbook directly under the ELMO. Sometimes there is a really great word problem that has a picture that goes along with it. If I had a projector, I could show my students this example rather than just explaining verbally what the picture looks like. I can also hook a laptop (which I obtained from a QSM grant) to the projector to show PowerPoint presentations to my students as well as mathematics related web sites. These are all things that I used to do at my old school before Hurricane Katrina. I would greatly appreciate it if my proposal was funded so I could do the the great things that I used to do with my students.
