Oh, what a difference a day makes. As I was struggling last year to prepare my eighth-graders for their Florida Writes writing exam, I was at a loss to find new ways to motivate my students to improve their writing. (Think back to your middle school days and how much you looked forward to writing essays...) One day I wandered into a colleague's classroom and saw the light...literally. She was using an ELMO device to show examples of student work. This device will project an image of any two or three dimensional object (via projector) onto a wall or screen! I knew immediately that I had to have one for my classroom. I checked with the media center, and there was one left for me to check out -- temporarily. The next day, when I used it in my classroom for the first time, it was as though I had waved a magic wand over my students. Not only did they try the new writing techniques, they volunteered to show their work to the class. Some even begged! Students received immediate feedback on their work -- both praise and words to encourage specific improvements. It was amazing. I saw such improvement in student achievement during the short time I had the technology available to me. I would love to repeat and build on the success I had last year, but I no longer have the ELMO at my disposal. Having an ELMO that was dedicated to my classroom would ensure I could repeat my success this year and years to come. Thank you.
