Ours is not just a school, but a community as well. I have been on staff for more than fifteen years, teaching literacy to various grades. Last year our principal initiated the Book of the Month. Each classroom receives a copy of the book, which is read by either the teacher or a guest reader (a member of the school, or a member of the community). All of the grades listen to the same book, and then the fun begins!! Active, hands on learning. The teachers decide what the activity of the month will be (based upon the book). The grades work together and all of the children are active participants. Last year, one of the activities that the first grade participated in was exploring Mexico. We made pinatas, cooked and ate Mexican food, learned about Cinco de Mayo, made Mexican flags, shields and chains. The students not only learned about Mexico, but every child was engaged in the project. All of this due to a book of the month about time. Each of the other grades also chose a country in another time zone and learned about their country, actively engaged as well. The obstacle that we face is monetary. We would like the Book of the Month to continue. The books that we are in need of are Grandfather Tang's Story and the Grapes of Math, two wonderful read alouds that will integrate literacy and math. The projects that the grades can do are endless.... what a wonderful way to connect literacy and math. A hands on, school- wide interdisciplinary project, where every child is an active participant. We all want to see our children learn in a way that is meaningful to them, and to turn them on to the wonder of books. Thank you for helping our dream come true.
