Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a Family and Consumer Sciences teacher at an inner city public school. I teach students in grades 9-12 Clothing Construction. Students have an opportunity to construct three garments that they are able to wear either themselves or for someone else. The majority of my student love the class but are unable to afford the materials required, or have no means of getting to the fabric store. Each student must provide their own pattern, fabric, notions and other necessary material. If a fabric store was located in the classroom, they would be able to fulfill the requirements for the class and give them a sense of pride because they would have made a garment they could wear.
Each student has to make three garments- which requires three patterns and fabric. The class would need at least 100 yards of fabric to complete their required project in addition to other sewing supplies (scissors, sewing machine needles, etc).
My student would greatly appreciate any assistance they could get!!!
Nearly all students from low‑income households
